Title of Lesson: Gerunds 

Primary Subject Area: English Languages Arts

Grade Level: 9th- - 12th Grades

Overview: 

The students will research information to gain a better understanding of the Gerunds, sharpen research skills, formal writing skills, and creative writing skills over the course of this unit. 

Objectives:

Louisiana – English/Language Arts Content Standards: Grades 9th -12th

1. Students read, comprehend, and respond to a range of materials, using a variety of strategies for different purposes. (ELA-1-H1, H3, H5)

2. Students write competently for a variety of purposes and audiences. (ELA-2-H2, H5).

3. Students communicate using Standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and handwriting. (ELA-3-H2, H3).

4. Students demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning and communicating. (ELA-4-H5).

5. Students locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge. (ELA-5-H1, H4).

6. Students read, analyze, and respond to literature as a record of life experiences. (ELA-6-H4).

7. Students apply reasoning and problem solving skills to reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing. (ELA-7-H2, H4).
 
 

Materials: 

a. Book
Maurer, Jay. 2000.  Focus on Grammar: An Advanced Course for Reference and Practice, New York: Longman, pp. 300-307.

b. TV/computer connection, computers, internet access, handouts, quizzes.

Time: 2 x 45 minutes

Procedures: 

  1. Students will view Linear PowerPoint  presentation.  This will include basic information about the gerunds, definition, functions, examples, and several notes about gerunds.
  2. Students will interact with computer – Hyper Linear presentation. 
  3. Internet Access – Directed Study (hands on research in classroom).
  4. Class Discussion:  Handouts concerning research (note cards, format, sources, and bibliography).  Areas of focus assigned. 
  5. Library Research – books, reference books, internet, magazines
  6. Students will work independently on rough draft of research project.
  7. Students will exchange and critique – proofread and edit
  8. Word Document – Students will type final draft of research project.


Assessment: 

1. Students will answer questions concerning Gerunds – based on the information in Linear PowerPoint presentation, Hyper Linear, and the Websites (see directed study)that they have been visited.

2. Students will participate in scavenger hunt, locate information, and recorded record answers on handout given.
 

3. Students will locate at least 5 sources, take notes, and fill out “note cards” worksheet.
 

4. Students will write a rough draft, edit and proofread, and write a final draft.
